-
- Ack! I got the 3.53 install disks and installed them. Everything is
- working fine EXCEPT my start-up sound gets either a)distorted or b)turned
- into meaningless repeating garbage until I play another sound. I would think
- it to be some problem with keeping up with playing a WAV and loading up windows.
- and the 4k buffer limit cannot be expanded to facilitate a large loading of
- the sound. Wav's play fine in windows and my other system sounds play fine.
- I have tried the startup sound as several differet WAV's (long and short)
- with the same result happening. I'm using DMA 5 and have had no problems like
- this ever with the old drivers. Everything else seems to work fine...Any ideas
- ???

- When playing Epic Pinball with the GUS I get the sound fx much louder

- Thanks to everyone who sent me this information, however this is *not* the
- problem for the Gateway Pentiums. I have personally tried it (v8.2) and it
- does not work. Also, the latest mouse driver is v9.01, which I'm told is the
- bugfix version for v9.0.
-
- It looks as though Dell Pentiums may have the same problem with SBOS.
- According to Gateway, both Gateway and Dell get their motherboards directly
- from Intel. I heard from one person with a Zeos Pentium who doesn't have a
- problem with SBOS and the PS/2 port. Perhaps Intel should contract the P6
- out to Zeos...

- Phoenix Beta Test Application
-
- If you are interested in taking part in a beta test of this
- revolutionary new product, you may fill out the questionnaire that
- follows and return it to us by May 31st, 1994. We are looking for all
- levels of computer skills from novice to advanced. An effective method
- of contact ability is critical for our coordination of product fixes and
- improvements.
- You must have the means to periodically receive software upgrades via an
- electronic mail system. If you think that you would be able to spend
- some time testing this new product with your favorite game software,
- then we would like to consider you for this exciting new joystick
- experience.
-
- The Phoenix Flight & Weapons Control System heralds a new generation in
- joystick controllers for the PC flight simulation and air combat
- enthusiast.
-
- The ultimate in flight and weapons control systems for the PC, the
- Phoenix provides analog and digital throttle and rudder controls in
- addition to 46 independent, user defined, button functions.
-
- Unlike the other flight control products, the Phoenix requires no
- special software support in the computer program other than that for a
- basic PC joystick. This means that the Phoenix is plug 'n play
- compatible with the latest flight and space combat games and virtually
- all flight games currently on the market.
-
- The Phoenix comes with everything required to get the computer flight
- jockey airborne quickly and hassle free. An installation program
- performs a thorough system diagnostic to ensure that the computer is
- free of common installation problems and that the Phoenix is correctly
- installed. A DOS based configuration program provides a Windows like
- graphical user interface that allows you to easily program each of the
- Phoenix buttons to execute any conventional game command including
- joystick
- buttons and keyboard commands.
-
- The Phoenix Flight & Weapons Control System includes:
-
- o Analog an digital throttle and rudder control o 46 independent, and
- fully programmable buttons o Navigational control arm
- o Aileron and elevator control o Graphical user interface
-
- The Phoenix is compatible with all current IBM PC game and sound cards
- and is covered by our 1 year Limited Warranty. Analog rudder and
- throttle require a game port with dual joystick support.

- Yup.... everything is happening at once. Validation problems,
- EPAS running out of space, and now we filled wuarchive as well.
-
- Due to the popularity of GUS and all the support we've been
- getting, our European site konstanz will no longer be available
- because it was too much of a load on there system. The admin
- at that site have closed down the GUS archive.
-
- BUT have no fear, we are looking at alternatives. The fellow
- who started the GUS archive on this site (not the admin) is
- also looking at alternatives. So we may have some good news
- pretty soon.
-
- But in some ways, I'm glad to see what GUS is getting so
- popular that we've brought down 3 systems in 2 days! :)

- Stay tuned for more info to come....

- My Windows startup sound has been Jazz from Wing Commander 2: "You got it,

- sound gets clipped to "You got ... stro." The shutdown sound is unaffected
- however. This leads me to believe that the driver is fiddling with some

-
- The problem with the UMC chips are with 16-BIT DMA. For me, this caused
- Windows to crash like a big dog. The solution is to use 8-bit DMA which only
- slows down patch loading a bit.
-
- And the best way to check to see if it works is just to use the 16-bit DMA.
- If you get crashes, then use an 8-bit dma.....
-
- There is a hardware fix, but I'm told that it's only for the brave of heart....

-
- Hello all. I've finally finished validating new files for the GUS
- Internet Archives for Thursday, May 27th, 1994.
-
- Sorry it took so long. Going through 72Mb of files took longer than I
- expected. I shouldn't have waited this long but I was not available for a
- month or so. And yes, once again, the amount of contributions per month
- have exceeded my expectations. I didn't expect to see 72Mb of files in
- less than 2 months. I'm both delighted to see GUS's support growing
- faster and faster, and yet dismayed at the growing amount of work that
- goes along with such growth in popularity. :)
-
- Back to the business at hand.....
-
-
- NOTE TO ALL UPLOADERS!
- ======================
-
- To all who are trying to upload more files to EPAS, yes, we have once
- again ran out of room. Anyone want to donate a 100 Gig drive to the
- cause? :) I'm only kidding of course, the donation part. But I am caught
- speechless as far as the growth of popularity and support is concerned.
- For those who have been following our archive threw the last several
- years, the growth of GUS file submissions have exceeded our predictions
- time and time again. In fact, so much so that we have reached the limits
- of EPAS time and time again. During our last round of reconfiguration,
- we have already limited and defined EPAS as the submission and newly
- validated files site only. That indeed did gave us room to spare. But
- now we're getting 70+MB per validation period. And in fact, over the
- past 2 weeks while I'm validating the current batch of files, I've
- noticed that we now have a new batch of files all of 40Mb worth already.
- Eeks! Now notice that EPAS is the only site with such limitations. All
- other GUS Internet Archives have the full archive. And even those sites,
- we'll probably be looking at how many megs (gigs?) a full archive does
- take up and might need to cutback the older files in another couple of
- years time, if our submissions are mushrooming the way it is right now.
-
- But anyway, back to EPAS. We are looking at clearing more room. So no
- worries, mate. But I'll probably have to get onto validating the next
- batch of files sooner than I'd wanted to. ie. probably in about a week
- or so. So if you are the type that like to grab files from EPAS so that
- you can do a "mget *" for newly validated files only, grab them within a
- week cause these files will probably be deleted and be replaced by the
- next batch of files. So that I can clear up even more room from EPAS.
-
-
- NOTES TO ALL:
- =============
-
- The newly validated files are now in EPAS in their appropriate
- directories. Please give the rest of the GUS Internet Archive sites 24
- hours to get updated.
-
- If you catch any mistakes and/or typos, please let me know!
- Thanks. <twong@civil.ubc.ca>
-
- NOTE: Because of the disk full problem, the file "tecnovox.zip"
- in ".../sound/wav/files" was not copied correctly. This should be
- resolved by the morning. Otherwise, you can still grab this file from
- the mirror of the submit directory from the other (non EPAS) sites.

- NOTES:
- ======
-
- SPECIAL NOTES TO ALL UPLOADERS:
- ------------------------------
-
- I've noticed that someone has been fooling around with the files in
- the submit directory again. We are in the process of tracking down the
- [fill in your favorite swear word] since all activities are logged!
- It took me 2 weeks to go through and try out all the files. But by
- the end of these 2 weeks, a number of the files I was testing were
- already gone. Remember, WE WILL TRACK YOU DOWN. And you WILL BE
- REPORTED. We left read and write access in the submit directory for
- everyone's convenience. If you abuse this privilege, we won't be too
- kind to you, nor will other users of our archives.
-
- To all uploaders, please continue to upload to the submit directory
- so that people can get access to your files before I've had a chance
- to validate them. But should you find that your upload is not listed
- anywhere above while you have uploaded the file before I started my
- validation (ref. my validation commencement annoucement). Please send
- me an email and let me know. I'll personally take care of your file.
- Thanks.
-
-
-
- NEW SUBDIRECTORIES:
- -------------------
-
- Due to the popularity of several new sound formats, the following
- subdirectories have been newly created:
-
- ../sound/far/files
- ../sound/far/util
-
- ../sound/mtm/files
- ../sound/mtm/util
-
- ../sound/s3m/files
- ../sound/s3m/util
-
- ../sound/ult/files
- ../sound/ult/util
-
- I'm still in the processes of moving some of the older files from
- ../sound/misc into these newly created directories. Please bear with
- me.
-
- Misc Notes to uploaders:
- ------------------------
-
- awe32*.* - nothing to do with GUS. This is the GUS archive.
- doommenu2.zip, doomld2.zip - Nothing to do with GUS
- gusmag.zip - already have it with name uss0001.zip under .../misc
- lha.exe - these utils can be found in other parts of our ftp sites
- musicbox.zip - doesn't work with GUS, and not for GUS anyway
- okjuke.zip - Not a GUS program
- pongkomb.zip - Not a GUS game
- splay100.zip - Not a GUS program
- tss.zip - doesn't work. Blank screen and crashes
- ult.* - Can't play since these files need UltraTracker 1.5 but the only
- version available at our site and in other sites is 1.4
-
-
- Files that are corrupt and needs to be re-uploaded:
-
- cyberp.zip, mcosm11.exe, mfdeep.zip, zakfov10.zip
-
-
-
- OK, that's it. I'll cut this short cause I still of tons to do.
-
- Happy GUS'ing!
-
-
-
- Thomas.

- Subject: XMI to MID converter?
-
- Greetings!
-
- Does anybody know of a XMI to MID format converter? Or maybe someone
- could send me the descriptions of these formats so I could write a
- program myself. I think it should be easy to do.
-
- Any help will be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thanks,
- Snoopy.

- Hello
-
- I am having problems with the Windows Drivers which come with the new v3.53
- install disks.
-
- I have the rev3.7 GUS card with 1MB on board (220,7,7,11,7)
- My machine is a 486dx2/66 VLB with 16Mb RAM.
-
- I used previously the v3.11 install disks, the windows drivers for GUS worked
- perfectly fine with my Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and NDW 3.0 shell setup.
-
- Now with the new v3.53 windows drivers, windows will not even boot up. NDW will
- give a GPF with the Ultrasnd.drv file and i will get kicked out of windows.
- when the shell for ndw was removed, and progman put in place, windows
- booted up, until the opening wav was to be played then HANG !!!!!
-
- Is there any solutions for this problem ? The old driver work fine, so i would
- expect some problems with the new driver....
-
- please reply soon.
-
- thanks
-
- Jerry Koh
